The Station of Marine Biology of Inhaca was born of scientists' interest for a favorable field ofscientific investigation. According to Ario de Azevedo (a teacher), it is difficult to precise when the scientific investigation began in Inhaca but is known that announced about the existence of two paradisiacal islands in the Indian in 1909 European newspapers, referring to the islands of Inhaca and the Portuguese due to its wealth in biodiversity.

Since 1921 Teachers and students from Witwatersrand University(Wits) of South Africa come to Inhaca. The teacher Van der Horst, zoologist of Wits, did field practice in Inhaca since 1933 with their students. In those campaigns they used tents for lodging lack. Due to these facts Aurélio Quintanilha, PhD presented in an international Congress of the Society of Studies of Mozambique the need to build a Station to attend the investigation in Inhaca in 1947. To reinforce Professor Quintanilha's idea Professor Van der Horst proposed to the General Government from Mozambique compartition of Wits in process of following molds: " The Portuguese Government would build the buildings and would supply some furniture and Wits offered scientific equipment and technical books; the teachers and studentswere authorizedto use the Station that would be also availablefor other scientists ".

The constructions were executed between1948-1450 under Almirante João Moreira Rato orientation and inaugurated in 1951, its administration had been given to the Marine Department of General Government from Mozambique. In 1952 it was requested the creation of places for Director and person in charge of the Station but it was just provided initially someone in charge, for which, it was in 1953 named José Joaquim Cravo. In 1955 were builttwo residences (1 and 2)for Director and person in charge.

On May 20, 1963, respecting the Ordinance 2375/63 of May 4, EBMI is given to the Institute of Scientific Investigation of Mozambique. In 1965 the Forest and marine reserves of Inhaca were created and they were given the Station of Marine Biology of Inhaca for administration. After independence it passed for Eduardo Mondlane University. In 1976 the Forest Reserves were demarcated. Between 1982-1883 was drawn the strategic plan of Inhaca and in 1989 the forest oaks are planted in Ponta Torres and in Ngomela in oriental area.
